Длина береговой линии Дании составляет 7438 км. В стране нет мест, удаленных от берега моря более чем на 60 км.
Дания на суше граничит только с Германией; протяженность этой границы 68 км. Морская граница с Германией следует через Кильскую бухту, пролив Фемарн-Бельт и по Балтийскому морю. На востоке граница Дании со Швецией проходит по проливам Эресунн (Зунд) и Каттегат, а на севере пролив Скагеррак отделяет Данию от Норвегии. Дании принадлежит восточная часть шельфа Северного моря.
В состав государства, помимо территории собственно Дании, входят бывшие датские колонии Фарерские о-ва и Гренландия, получившие самоуправление и представительство в датском парламенте. Фарерские острова, удаленные на 375 км к северу от Шотландии, занимают площадь 1399 кв. км. Они находились под властью Дании с 1380, местное самоуправление им было предоставлено в 1948. Гренландия - самый большой остров мира, ее площадь 2 175 600 кв. км, но из них лишь 341 700 кв. км свободны от льда. Гренландия была колонией Дании с 1729, в 1953 была объявлена частью страны, а в 1979 приобрела автономию.
